Since 1966 Skomakaregatan 4, right in the heart of Malmo, was reputed for its grilled beefs. ”Stek-Wändaren” and ”Burger Grill” was started by Tore Lauritzson, a dual restaurant with separate entrances. Burger Grill served simple menus for thinner wallets and shorter stops while ”Stek-Wändaren” was the city’s first US inspired steak house, serving a wider assortment of well prepared menus. In a press clip one could read that the restaurant could be divided into three sections. The first section hamburgers for people in a hurry, the second section the day’s lunch under kr 5:- and in the third a relaxed meal of roast beef for kr 12.50.

”Stek-Wändaren” was planned with the aim of establishing a restaurant chain which failed to materialise. Instead the name was changed to MANDO (latin for ”I eat”) and the two entrances became one with a common menu. Mando still looks the same with a long bar and serving tables at the rear and by the front window. Mando lives on as a fast and intesive place with quick service and a brisk turnaround of guests.

The secret behind the meat quality is the hanging method used to tenderize the meat. Over several years a storage area on the upper floor of the yard house was used for hanging the meat. It was just Mando and Falstaff restaurant who tenderized their own meat. Mando was among the first to offer ”Take Away” service and the old sign can still be seen at the restaurant.

Bo Duvander, also nicknamed Mr Mando, employed by Tore Lauritzson in 1972, bought over Mando in 1974 and ran it until 1998. Under his direction with dedicated staff and pleasant guests the special Mando atmosphere lives on unto this day.

Bo made the Plank Steak a permanent feature on the menu and started counting the number of Plank Steaks sold which still amuse guests and passers by as they observe the latest count on the black board. He was fond of statistics and reckoned that it takes one ox to every 30 Plank Steaks – by now thats a whole herd of cattle, have fun counting yourself exactly how many!

Here’s a PR photograph of Bo Duvander around the latter half of the 70s

Unto this day two still life two-faced lightbox pictures can be seen, one to the right of the bar and another above the cellar stairway.
